The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) has launched a free smartphone app that provides information on travel destinations, restaurants, train routes, free Wi-Fi spots, ATM locations, hospitals, and other useful tips to visitors. The app is available in English, Korean, and Chinese. Operated in partnerships with private-sector travel information providers, the app is available at www.jnto.go.jp/smartapp.
Japan is experiencing a boom in visits by international travelers, according to the JNTO, reaching an unprecedented 18.9 million between January through August of 2017. International arrivals in August were up 20.9 percent from the same month a year before, the agency reported.
Travelers from China alone reached 819,000 in August. The JNTO attributes the rise in tourism to the relaxation of visa requirements and an increase in cruise ship visits.
